Bio

Matthew Brunwasser is an independent journalist living and working in Southeast Asia covering Myanmar/Burma and the region.

Specializing in international affairs, human rights and investigative journalism, he has reported from 30+ countries for more than 40 international print, digital, radio and television media organizations including regular reports for The New York Times and The World broadcast nationally on US Public Radio, among others.

Previously, he was based in the Balkans and Turkey for more than 20 years.

As an Investigative Reporting Fellow at the University of California at Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism he investigated how the U.S. Bechtel Corporation wins contracts in the Balkans from some of Europe’s poorest and most corrupt countries for roads they don’t need and can’t afford.

He was also a U.S. Fulbright Scholar researching disinformation and countering strategies in Bulgaria while working with Factcheck.bg.

As a media development adviser, he has consulted for international organizations including UNICEF, UNDP, USAID and OSCE on media development projects, media freedom rights and countering online disinformation.

A native of San Francisco, California, Matthew Brunwasser has a Bachelor of Arts in history from Reed College in Portland, Oregon and a Master of Journalism from the University of California at Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism where he specialized in documentary film production.
